BACK IN TIME 18: ANDERLECHT - BEERSCHOT

With Beerschot starting the 2020-2021 season in the First Division, we look back at our club’s history and turn the spotlight on a corresponding fixture from yesteryear… Today: Anderlecht - Beerschot, season 1980-1981.

ANDERLECHT WINS THE TITLE… AND SCORE EIGHT AGAINST JAN TOMASZEWSKI

When browsing through our club’s history the Anderlecht v Beerschot game that jumps out immediately is the confrontation from April 1981, where the home team produced “champagne football” , won the title and beat goalkeeper Jan Tomaszewski eight times on the way. It was a disastrous night for Beerschot.
Eight-two the final score was, with Kenneth Brylle scoring four. The Beerschot defense had no answer to Anderlecht’s impressive combination football. They were outplayed and outran, didn’t find any space and hardly got out of their own penalty area.
Despite Anderlecht’s dominance Beerschot in the end scored twice: late in the first half when Julien Cools chipped the ball over Munaron, and in the dying minutes of the game through Jean Rylant who had come on for Ignace Suply on the hour. Cold consolation it was…
“They were unstoppable”, Beerschot defender Louis Van Gucht sighed afterwards. “The Anderlecht players came to us from all possible angles. We didn’t have a clue where to run first. On top of that they were ever so efficient when shooting at goal. We were totally outclassed. This memory will linger on for the rest of my career.”

Beerschot avoided relegation in the one but last game of the season by winning the local derby with Berchem Sport by 6-2. So, coach Leon Nollet’s team finished 15th in the table, just in front of Waterschei, Beringen and Berchem Sport. Champions Anderlecht won the title with a margin of eleven points on SC Lokeren. Standard Liège, in third place, were 15 points behind.

Twenty five players featured for our club during the 1980-81 season: François Van Nerum played in all 34 games, René Mücher 33, Paul Lambert 32, Louis Van Gucht en Louis De Weerdt 31, Julien Cools 29, Stani Gzil en Roger Schouwenaar 27, Jempi Andries en Paul Beloy 23, Nicky Schippers en Jean Rylant 19, Jan Tomaszewski 16, Frans Roosen en Denis Loopmans 12, Dirk Hiel 11, Harry Lubse en Frank Schrauwen 9, Ignace Suply 7, John Van Abbeny 4, Raymond Mullens, Julien Van Opdorp, Guido Mallants en Dirk Goossens 2, and Johan Coninx 1.

The average home attendance was 6,765. The games against Anderlecht and Antwerp attracted 12,000 fans to the Olympic Stadium.

The 1980-1981 season ended on a low in the end, because a three month long investigation by the Belgian FA resulted in Beerschot being set back to Division Two on suspicion of bribery. It led to the departure of a handful of first team players: Jan Tomaszewski, who went back to Poland to become player-manager of LKS Lodz, Julien Cools, Paul Beloy, Guido Mallants, Hary Lubse, Julien Van Opdorp, René Mücher and Johan Coninx. A massive clear out it was…
