BACK IN TIME: EUPEN – BEERSCHOT, SEIZOEN 2010-2011

With Beerschot starting the 2020-2021 season in the First Division, we look back at our club’s history and turn the spotlight on a corresponding fixture from yesteryear… Today: Eupen - Beerschot, season 2010-2011.

WITH A STRONG DEFENSIVE PERFORMANCE FROM THE MONTEYNE BROTHERS

Eupen and Beerschot haven’t played each other that often in Belgian football. So yes, it took a while before we spotted a confrontation between the Pandas and the Bears in our Beerschot history books.  Eventually we opted for a game early in the 2010-11 season. A game we won.
Eupen played their home games at Sint-Truiden at the time…and that was a 60 kilometes less long drive for the players’ coach than to their Kehrweg ground near the German border..

A poor game of football. Boring stuff. That’s what the newspapers reports stated on the Monday after the game. Goalkeeper Tomas Kaminski produced two fine saves and thus prevented Obradovic and Kevin Vandenbergh (who also played for Beerschot on a Blue Monday) from scoring for the home team. It took Beerschot one good combination to take the three points. Faris Haroun (yes, the man who is now captain of our rivals Antwerp FC) received the ball from Daniel Cruz, shook off his opponent and put the ball in the net, off the post.

Eupen put the pressure on after the break and claimed a penalty for a foul from Pieterjan Monteyne on Obradovic. But ref Verbist waved away the protest. Luckily there wasn’t VAR at the time to over-rule his decision.

Late in the second half coach Glen De Boeck brought on Wim De Decker as a fifth defender to consolidate the narrow 1-0 margin. And it worked. Beerschot didn’t create one scoring opportunity after the break. No shots on target but three points in the bag. Forget all the rest.

His brother Martijn arrived in 2007 and stayed for four seasons in which he played 117 games, scoring one goal. He later moved to Holland and played for Roda JC Kerkrade, theN returned to Roeselare and bowed out at amateur club Gullegem.
