BACK IN TIME: RACING GENK – BEERSCHOT 1-3, SEASON 2007-2008

With Beerschot starting the 2020-2021 season in the First Division, we look back at our club’s history and turn the spotlight on a corresponding fixture from yesteryear… Today: Racing Genk - Beerschot 1-3, season 2007-2008

GUSTAVO COLMAN LEADS BEERSCHOT TO A BRILLIANT VICTORY

Beerschot’s away record against Racing Genk is anything but impressive. But thirteen (!) years ago our Mannekes recorded a nice victory. Convincing, deserved… and with Gustavo Colman shining in midfield. A recurring fact during that season because our Argentinian could play a bit.

All goals were scored in het last half hour of the game. Brazilian Ederson Tormena broke the deadlock but just two minutes later Tom Soetaers equalised for the home team. Then Beerschot’s midfield Wamfor-Cruz-Colman-Losada (what a foursome!) took control. Wamfor in his defensive role; the three South Americans as football magicians, outplaying their opponents making and scoring goals. With ten against eleven after Tosin Dosunmu was sent-off just after the hour.

Gustavo Colman starred that afternoon and was the missing link as a playmaker throughout the whole season: the engine in midfield in head coach Harm Van Veldhovens’ team. Against Racing Genk he directed Beerschot to victory, with Sanharib Malki and Hernan Losada getting goals number two and three.

Beerschot finished the season in 5th spot, behind champions Standard Liège and Anderlecht, Club and Cercle Brugge. Sanharib Malki was our club top scorer with 16 goals.

Gustavo Colman, who is 35 now, arrived at Beerschot in 2006 as a 21 year old and stayed for two seasons. He was an exceptionally gifted footballer and became the fans’ favourite pretty soon. He played 45 games for the club, scoring four times and was then transferred to Turkish top team Trabzonspor where he stayed for five seasons. With Trabzonspor he played in the Champions League, against Inter Milan amongst others, when he was voted “Man of the Match”. Unfortunately Colman didn’t return to Beerschot after his Turkish period. Instead he moved back to Argenintia, played for Rosario Central and then  disappeared in anonymity…
