VICTORY AT SCLESSIN WITH A WORLD CLASS GOAL FROM PATRICK VERVOORT

Two weeks after beating Club Brugge at the Olympic Stadium Beerschot recorded another nice win mid December 1986, in an away game at Standard Liège. The Belgian sports media tagged Beerschot as "the giant killers from the Kiel" and coach Dimi Davidovic's team didn't fail to impress at Sclessin Stadium either.

A biased referee Piraux tried to put the home team on its way in the early stages of the game with a couple of 'easy' free kicks, but goalie Peter Kerremans palmed the danger away. Gradually Beerschot took control and translated that in two good goals: Willy Wellens scored number one when he netted the rebound of a blocked shot from Dirk Goossens and just one minute after that Patrick Vervoort put his name on the score sheet as well. And what a goal that was. Our leftfooted wing back outplayed five Standard defenders before driving the ball in the top corner. A world class goal from Vervoort who at the time was a regular in Belgium's national team, with whom he had starred six months earlier during the World Cup finals in Mexico.

Together with Peter Kerremans he was in the running for the Man of the Match nomination that night. Our goalkeeper's contribution was huge in Beerschot's away win when he saved a penalty from his colleague Gilbert Bodart on the half hour and kept the Standard forwards at bay with a a handful of good interventions. The home team scored on the hour with an unstoppable shot from Repcic... but a sound, well concentrated and tough tackling Beerschot defense impressed and kept the score to 1-2. The best scoring opportunity was for Willy Wellens, but he put the ball over the bar from only five yards out.

"I am shocked and ashamed I didn't score there", Wellens apologised afterwards. "It looked like a sitter and it actually was one as well, but the ball bounced akwardly when I was to slot it in. One of the worst misses in my career."

Coach Dimi Davidovic praised his team's determination and style of play. "Despite missing Mark Talbut in the heart of our defense we put in a very solid performance at Standard. We deserved this victory.  It is a shame we lost our previous game against Charleroi and failed to stay in that top five position in the table though. But with the kind of football we are producing right now I am sure we can aim for a European ticket."

Those words proved to be a bit too optimistic as Beerschot finished the season in 9th place, right in the middle of the table... with no European prospects.

Anderlecht won the league title that season with a two point advantage over KV Mechelen. Seraing and Berchem Sport were relegated to Division 2.
