CHAMPIONS STRONGER THAN MANNEKES

BEERSCHOT - CLUB BRUGGE  1 - 3

Zero points for Beerschot from the last home game of a disappointing season on Friday night. Club Brugge were the better team and recorded a handsome victory. The Belgian champions were 3-0 up on the hour and looked set for a landslide win. But our Mannekes didn't surrender, bounced back and scored from the spot halfway the second half.

Beerschot started well with a couple of good moves and put the visitors under pressure but then Club Brugge took over and made the game one way traffic. Skov Olson had a goal disallowed for offside but only a couple of minutes later Lang put the ball in the net at the far post after yet another nice combination. Antoine Lejoly then denied the champions on three more occasions when Vanaken, Lang and Vormer went for goal. Also Joren Dom had to clear a ball off the line while a Rits shot ended up high in the stands.  Beerschot were by far second best in that period. Holzhauser couldn't get the team going and goalkeeper Mignolet enjoyed an easy night off.

The visitors' dominance eventually resulted in more goals shortly after the break when Skov Olsen and De Ketelaere netted and put the game beyond Beerschot's reach. Three-nil the scoreline on the hour: done and dusted. An Anderlecht scenario (0-7 remember?!) beckoned but Beerschot reacted well under the circumstances. And got themselves a richly deserved consolation goal from the penalty spot. It was Lawrence Shankland who cooly slot home from 11 metres after a foul on Jan Van den Bergh.
