Kortrijk-Beerschot: 2010-2011

BACK IN TIME: KV KORTRIJK - BEERSCHOT

With Beerschot starting the 2020-2021 season in the First Division, we look back at our club’s history and turn the spotlight on a corresponding fixture from yesteryear…

Today: KV Kortrijk v Beerschot, season 2010-2011

A DRAW IN PLAY-OFF 2… AND EVEN A GOAL

Beerschot’s record at Kortrijk’s Guldensporen Stadium looks awful. The six League and Play-Off matches between 2008 and 2013 resulted in four defeats, two draws and not one victory… with a goal difference of 1 scored and 14 conceded. For today’s look back we opted for the only game in which our “Mannekes” scored.

The 2010-2011 campaign was the last under the name of Germinal Beerschot. The year after Patrick Vanoppen took over… and under his guidance the club went bust. Not so happy days! Anyway, we finished 13th in the league with 26 points, just three more than Eupen, who were relegated. On top of that, Beerschot only scored 24 goals in 30 league games. A very poor record. Compared to this season the difference is striking as we already netted 28 goals in eleven.

Beerschot had little hope when they traveled to Kortrijk in the beginning of April in 2011 for a rather irrelevant Play-Off game 2. As earlier that season we already got thrashed there 4-0.

About 3,000 people watched a poor game of football with not one attempt on target in a dreadful first half. Just before the hour our former player Mo Messoudi opened the score with a free kick. Beerschot reacted straight away, were given a penalty after a foul on Mikulic, but Kagelmacher saw his spot kick stopped by Verbauwhede. The KVK goalie produced a marvelous double save after shots by Custovic and Acosta a little bit later. And eventually Beerschot scored a well deserved equaliser when a Custovic free kick was deflected in by a home defender. 1-1 final score.

Germinal Beerschot didn’t deliver in Play-Off 2 either, finishing third behind Westerlo and Zulte Waregem.
