Report: Beerschot-Eupen

BEERSCHOT – EUPEN  0 – 1

Beerschot had an off-day this evening, never got in their stride, suffered their second home defeat of the season and lost their top position in the league. Eupen were the better team, more efficient as well. A header from Agbadou proved enough to claim victory.

Lack of concentration and nonchalance in the Beerschot-defense led to three good scoring opportunities for Eupen early on, but their striker Musona put the ball high in the stands. After a quarter of an hour Beerschot reacted with a dangerous inswinging free kick from Holzhauser and a nice individual action from Tissoudali. Without success.

Our midfielders didn’t find any space or openings in the strong and well organized Eupen back four. The visitors were the better team, upped the pace even more and just after the half hour the inevitable happened when Agbadou raised high to head home a corner. A well deserved lead. Just before half time it could have easily been 0-2 but Baby’s thunderous shot rebounded from the underside of the crossbar. How lucky we were there.

Beerschot put some more pressure on but didn’t find their momentum. The combinations over the left wing stranded on the edge of the penalty area, which resulted in no clear cut chances before the break.

Two massive scoring opportunities for Beerschot early in the second half. Bourdin, who had come on for Vorogovskiy, saw his shot saved on the goal line and also Suzuki didn’t score in an one-on-one situation. But also Eupen created good chances on the counter. Three in a row even, but Mike Vanhamel produced three miraculous saves. Impressive stuff from our goalie.

Twenty minutes before the end it looked all over when Baby scored with a header but the goal was disallowed for a foul on Vanhamel. In an all or nothing last quarter Fréderic Frans hit the bar and the post. Beerschot lacked that little bit of luck to get that all important equalizer.
