Engels – Match report Racing Genk – Beerschot

RACING GENK – BEERSCHOT  1– 2
Sporting revenge for Beerschot after a pitch black and disappointing week in which we lost the derby against Antwerp and were beaten twice by KV Mechelen. A strong team performance, two peaches of a goal and solid defensive work tonight resulted in a win, three golden points and sixth spot in the table. Not bad for a newly promoted team… if we may say so ourselves.

Racing Genk started well and very offensive with high crosses from the wings but their 6ft8” striker Onuachu put both of his headers wide. Beerschot were under pressure, had a difficult first quarter of an hour with some sloppy passing but eventually got in their stride. Ryan Sanusi played a blinder in midfield and had a decisive foot in the better actions.

Brogno and Suzuki produced the best double pass combination of the first half but Vandevoordt saved our Japanese striker’s shot. Also Sanusi tried his luck with a dangerous shot in the corner but again the Genk goalie reacted swiftly to deny a Beerschot goal. At the other end the home team countered with a selfish Bongonda who shot wide.

Racing Genk started well in the second half too with good scoring opportunities for Ito, Lucumi and Bongonda and as many good saves from Vanhamel. But again Beerschot balanced the game, found space between the lines… and scored just after the hour. And what a goal it was. Thirty seconds after Holzhauser failed to tap in from only five yards Jan Van den Bergh let fly from 30 yards with the ball ending up in the top corner. What a scorcher… and what a goal celebration on top.

Ten minutes later Lady Luck chose Beerschot’s side when a header from Onuachu came back from the crossbar. Beerschot’s response came almost immediately when Bourdin’s shot in the penalty area bounced off Munoz’s arm. Referee Put went over to watch the VAR footage and pointed to the penalty spot, where Holzhauser scored with a ‘panenka’. Two-nil to Beerschot and the three points were in the bag.

In added on time Racing Genk Hrosovsky scored a brilliant goal on the volley that only had statistic value.
