WHAT A TURNAROUND THAT WAS

AA GENT - BEERSCHOT  2 - 2

Beerschot grabbed their first point of the season and did so in an unconventional way by coming back from 2-0 behind to secure a well deserved draw in the final fifteen minutes of the game. On will-power and determination.

Peter Maes' team started strongly and created a couple of good scoring opportunities when Sanyang excelled on the right wing. His shots however were easily saved by Gent goalie Bolat. The home team took over control in the second quarter of the first half and put a lot of pressure on the Beerschot defense when Hjulsager kept pumping balls in the box. An individual error and bad man marking eventually led to the opening goal when Castro Montes suddenly popped up in the box and  converted a low cross behind Vanhamel.

Leon Krekovic came on for Blessing Eleke at the start of the second half but it was AA Gent that doubled the score by Tarik Tissoudali who cleverly sailed round Frédéric Frans and put the ball past Vanhamel in the far corner. A peach of a goal.

Match over and done? Oh no. With that 2-0 on the scoreboard Beerschot got in their rhythm, found space between the lines with tireless work from Jan Van den Bergh and with Raphael Holzhauser picking up his role of playmaker in style. In a space of five minutes our Mannekes scored twice. Bamba Sanyang swerved into the Gent box and lashed out with the ball flying in the top corner and Marius Noubissi picked up a nice through ball from Holzhauser to score the equaliser. What a great and unexpected comeback. And ever so deserved on the basis of determination, high intensity and quality.

AA Gent coach Vanhaezebrouck then brought on four substitutes in an attempt to score a third goal but Beerschot's defense stood firm... and even threatened on the counter.
