Beerschot kick off the league campaign with a resounding 4-0 victory over Jong Gent Match - report 17 Aug Beerschot have made an excellent start to the new season in the Challenger Pro League.

Our lads got off to a flying start, thrashing Jong Gent 4–0 at ’t Kiel. After leading 1–0 at half-time, the score soared in the final quarter of an hour. Lukas Van Eenoo capped off a strong opening night with a superb solo run and the fourth goal.
The first league match of the season got off to a lively start. Jelle Vossen looked set to open his account at ’t Kiel after just five minutes. The experienced striker capitalised on sloppy defending by Jong Gent and slotted the ball into the net. However, the joy was short-lived as the goal was ruled out for offside.

Beerschot, however, continued to press hard for the opening goal. Around the 15-minute mark, William Popp was called into action for the first time. The Japanese goalkeeper dived well to parry a curling shot from Sylla and pushed the ball out for a corner.

At the other end, Beerschot remained the more dangerous side. Bas Van den Eynden headed a high cross narrowly wide, and Jelle Vossen also came close to scoring. Around the half-hour mark, the breakthrough finally came. Glenn Claes delivered an excellent cross into the box, where Lukas Van Eenoo met it with a header. Goalkeeper Evers tried to punch the ball out of his net, but it had clearly crossed the goal line: 1–0.

Beerschot even looked set to double their lead shortly afterwards. Glenn Claes struck from distance and saw his effort find the net. However, the referee had spotted a foul prior to the shot, meaning that goal was also disallowed.
Jong Gent had another chance through Sylla, but once again Popp was equal to it. Beerschot eventually went into the break with a deserved 1-0 lead.

The visitors came out of the dressing room playing slightly more attacking football and tried to press Beerschot higher up the pitch. Nevertheless, the home side remained in control. A free-kick from Genki Haraguchi skimmed the crossbar, whilst at the other end, the Beerschot defence kept the Ghent attacks under control with ease.
The second goal came around the hour mark. Glenn Claes sent a high cross into the box from the right flank, which Haraguchi headed back across goal. Jelle Vossen was just a hair’s breadth away, but D’Margio Wright-Phillips had tracked the play well and tapped the ball home: 2–0.

From that moment on, Beerschot took complete control of the match. The Mannekes upped the tempo and kept pushing for more. The third goal came ten minutes from time. Lukas Van Eenoo launched the attack; Sem Audoor chested the ball across to Anas Haj Mohamed, who played a short pass to Arnold Vula. The substitute striker didn’t hesitate and blasted the ball high into the net to make it 3–0.
De Kiel could then celebrate in style. In the closing stages, captain Lukas Van Eenoo rounded off the party. The midfielder slalomed impressively through the Ghent defence and calmly slotted the ball past Evers at the near post. 4–0!
In stoppage time, there was almost a fifth goal. New signing Toshio Lake, who had come on as a substitute shortly before, sent the ball just over the bar. In the end, the score remained at four goals.

Beerschot have certainly made their mark at the start of the season. Following a strong performance against Jong Gent, another challenge awaits them next Saturday. Mo Messoudi’s Mannekes will then travel to face relegated side Dender.
