A goal from Anas Haj Mohamed was enough for the Mannekes to claim a 0-1 victory. Thanks to the win, Beerschot remain top of the Challenger Pro League after six matchdays.
The first half was a cautious affair. Beerschot enjoyed most of the possession in the opening stages and created a few opportunities through, among others, Brian Plat and D’Margio Wright-Phillips, but clear-cut chances were few and far between. After almost half an hour, the home side created the first real chance of the game. Ngoyi was played through and raced towards William Popp, but his effort went wide.
The chance gave Sporting Hasselt confidence. The Limburg side grew into the game and posed more of a threat during the final quarter of the first half. An effort from Geoffry Hairemans took a deflection and went out for a corner, while a dangerous cross from Hairemans was just out of Ngoyi’s reach. At the other end, Lukas Van Eenoo got a shot away, but goalkeeper Cascio dealt with it comfortably. Both teams went into the dressing rooms at half-time with the score still 0-0.
After the break, Beerschot immediately went in search of the opening goal. It almost arrived straight away. Following a low cross, the ball fell to Arnold Vula via Wright-Phillips. The Congolese forward had two attempts from close range but could not get the ball over the line. After a video challenge by Mo Messoudi, no penalty was awarded.
The resulting corner did produce the desired breakthrough. Lukas Van Eenoo delivered a pinpoint cross into the box, where Anas Haj Mohamed nodded the ball backwards and into the net to make it 0-1.
Beerschot sensed an opportunity and continued to push forward. A second goal for Haj Mohamed looked close. Following another attack, Wright-Phillips picked out the Tunisian perfectly in front of goal. His subtle header looked destined for the net, but Cascio just managed to tip the ball away from underneath the crossbar.
After Beerschot’s strong start to the second half, the Mannekes were gradually forced further back. Sporting Hasselt sensed an equaliser and threw everything forward. Popp had to intervene decisively on several occasions, while the Kiel defence stood firm.
Messoudi brought on fresh legs, including Toshio Lake, Dennis Gyamfi and Glenn Claes, as Beerschot looked to see out the lead. The home side continued to apply pressure, but the Mannekes held on.
The closing stages were particularly tense. In the final minute, Messoudi requested another video challenge for a possible handball inside the box, but once again no penalty was awarded.
And then came the very last chance. In the eighth minute of stoppage time, Ryan Sanusi appeared to have a clear opportunity to beat Popp and equalise, but his effort struck his own teammate Cheick Thiam, who was unfortunately standing in the way just a metre from goal.
The referee blew the final whistle shortly afterwards. Beerschot win 0-1 in Hasselt and pick up three important points.
After six matchdays, the Mannekes therefore remain top of the Challenger Pro League. Sporting Hasselt
