Beerschot - Lierse 1-2
No joy for Beerschot in the last game of the season. Our Mannekes scored the opening goal in this regional drerby but then gave tneir lead away in two dreadful minutes to lose 1-2. Even a red card for Lierse player Gillekens couldn't inspire Beerschot to bounce back against ten men.
In a flat first half hour neither team could impress. It was Thorisson who eventually broke the deadlock when he swerved away from his opponent and hit the target. Two horrible mistakes in defence then put Lierse on their way to glory. First Matijas fumbled at an easy ball, then a simple through ball set the whole back four on their wrong foot. Both times De Schryver said thank you and put the ball in the net. From 1-0 up to 1-2 down in the space of three minutes.
Beerschot looked more adventurous in the second half but it was Lierse who created the first chance. Matijas saved well this time. Coach Wieland then brought on Kosiah, Van Himbeeck and Nzita in a desperate move to claim more impact in the game. All in vain though.
Fifteen minutes from the end Gillekens was sent off for punching Baeten in the face but even with eleven against ten Beerschot were unable to threaten or create chances. The game ended with a standing ovation for our central defender Fré Frans who leaves the club after three years and 67 games in purple and white. Thanks for those three years of full commitment and good luck in the future, big man.
