Dender – Beerschot: 1-1
Beerschot and Dender shared the points on Sunday afternoon after a hard fought battle in which our Mannekes were denied on several occasions by home goalkeeper Gies. After conceding a goal early in the second half Beerschot bounced back with a late equaliser when Weymans beat the home defence with a free kick curler in the far corner.
Beerschot set the pace before the break with some good combination football and chances for Huiberts and Verlinden. Minutes later Reyners came close with a good shot but the ball went wide off the leg of a Dender defender. The home team replied with a shot from Myny and a header from Cools. Tshimanga saved the first opportunity; the second went over. On the brink of half time Verlinden found Diawara in he box but our striker finished against the goalkeeper's legs. Close but no cigar. Nil-nil at the break.
The second half started bad. Myny dropped a free kick high in the Beerschot box, where Cools was given too much space. The Dender defender beat Matijas and so broke the deadlock. It proved a cold shower for Beerschot, who lost control and were lucky when Dender created a handful of good chances but failed to score a second.
After a double substitution our Mannekes fought back. Both Diawara, Wright-Philips and Verlinden were denied by Gies who played a blinder between the posts. When all seemed lost the impressive Dender goalie finally got beaten in injury time by a free kick from Weymans that went over everybody's head in the far corner... and earned us a very valuable point.
